There’s Willard Russell, a tortured murder veteran in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife Charlotte from dying of cancer, no matter how much sacrificial blood shed on her “prayer diary.” There are Carl and Sandy Henderson, a team of serial killers of husband and wife, who roam the American streets looking for a suitable model for photography and extermination. There is the preacher of the spider operator Roy and the assistant who plays the guitar of the lame virtuoso Theodore, running away from the law. And at the heart of all this is Arvin Eugene Russell, the orphan of Willard and Charlotte, who grew up to be a good but also a violent man.
