After connecting via radio with his girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles from the coastal colony, Joel starts falling for her again. When Joel realizes that there is nothing left for him underground, he decides against any logic to go out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.
