Cole Carter (Zach Efron) is a 23-year-old former star and fighter DJ on the electronic music scene (EDM), who dreams of becoming a great music producer. He constantly mentions that his plan to reach the top consists of three things: laptop, talent and leadership. Cole lives with his friend Mason (Johnny Weston), and they usually go out with his friends Ollie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Squirrel (Alex Schaffer) around his hometown in San Fernando. With the help of Mason and his friends, who advertise a lot on college campuses, Cole finally gets a DJ show at a local nightclub, where he meets the headliner, the once-innovative DJ James Reed (Wes Bentley). After their show, Cole finally comes face to face with James, sharing a cigarette. James invites Cole to a party where Cole begins hallucinating because the cigarette they shared contained phencyclidine (PCP). The next morning, Cole wakes up in James’ house, where he is introduced to Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski), a girl and James’s personal assistant, who voluntarily takes him home.

After the income from the event turned out to be unsatisfactory, they turned to their friend Paige (John Bernthal), who runs a real estate company where the four work. Later, James encourages Cole to serve as a DJ at a home party – a paid show. Explaining the key mechanics of DJing to Sophie, James sees Cole’s potential, which is interrupted by his three friends who come to the party. After Mason’s fight with one of James’s guests, James forgives Cole for his friend’s actions. From there, James takes Cole as his student. After listening to Cole’s original music, James criticizes Cole for imitating other famous producers, such as Skrillex, and he openly suggests using organic sounds for the original atmosphere. Then they create a song together using this technique with Sophie’s vocals, which is a hit at a local nightclub. One day James offersCole accompanies Sophie to a party hosted by his college classmates, where he learns more about her past, which causes a fight. Sophie will thank you later for your protection. Cole and his friends travel to Las Vegas for a music festival, where he turns away from his band to find Sophie, whom James has abandoned. Sophie then gives Cole MDMA, and they quickly fall in love, and together they run to the Las Vegas Strip, ride a High Roller and stay in Paris, Las Vegas, where they dance and end up having passionate sex.

When he returns to San Fernando, James invites Cole to watch an MMA fight with him and Sophie. The awkward moment ends when Sophie tells Cole to accept what happened and leave him alone, and James gives Cole a new MacBook Pro and the opportunity to open it for him at Summer Fest, a popular music festival. One day, Cole and Paige meet Tanya Romero (Alicia Coppola), whose house is on bail. During the negotiations, Paige buys his house and rents it out with the intention of quickly selling it for a significant price, which irritated Cole. When James’s alcoholism begins to affect Sophie, she and Cole go to a strip club to celebrate her birthday. Cole falls ill, and James discovers Cole’s relationship with Sophie, severing ties with him. Returning to his three friends, it turns out that Squirrel was looking for a better job thanks to his mind, and Mason rented a house for everyone. After intense walking with drugs and alcohol, Squirrel faints that morning and then dies from an overdose. After the funeral, the remaining friends begin to doubt their future, eventually going their separate ways when Mason accuses Ollie of overdosing on the drug Squirrel. Cole visits James, who has been completely consumed by alcoholism to inform him of Squirrel’s death, and perhaps it was his fault, to which James comforts him, and also tells him that Sophie has moved to the valley.San Fernando and runs a local coffee shop. the store where he later visits her.

The film ends with Sophie returning to college, reading to Ollie for a test, Mason taking care of the club, and Cole remaining positive about his future and forming a relationship with Sophie.

In the middle of the credit scene, Tanya opens the front door to the Adidas box, in which Cole kept all his earnings throughout the film.
